Brief Therapy – Brilliant, Bum or Between?

Shall I keep spinning the “B” wheel? Brief Therapy – Balanced? Believable? Behavioural?

Or just plain bum?

My teens use “bum” to mean “bad.” I, on the other hand, picture…well, a bum. Unmistakably necessary and oddly underappreciated. If the bum isn’t inherently bad, perhaps neither is Brief Therapy. It can be brilliant, bum, or somewhere between – depending on what you need.

Unlike traditional long-term therapy that unpacks history, patterns and possibly deeper issues. Brief Therapy acknowledges your past content, but starts right now and helps you act in the present. The premise is you can’t change the past—but you can choose how long you carry it forward.

In this (brief) post, I’ll explain what Brief Therapy is, why it works, and why you might want to try it. Let’s make every word count, shall we?

Wisdom that Guides Brief Therapy

In therapy, the hardest stuff to put into words often feels invisible – stress, worry, that vague “something’s off.” Enter metaphors and quotes: mini lightbulbs for the brain. Think of them as therapy’s emojis – tiny, effective, and hard to forget. That’s why I love dropping them into sessions – and this blog. Here are a few that capture Brief Therapy’s heart:

“Tiny changes today bring a dramatically different tomorrow.” – Richard Bach

Every session aims for one small, doable change that nudges you toward feeling better.

“Let your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” – Nelson Mandela

Focusing on strengths over fear helps build clarity, confidence, and forward momentum. (Note to self: resist “C-train” wordplay…Carmen—for real, lol.)

“Giving up on your goal because of one setback is like slashing your other three tires because you got a flat.” – Unknown

As someone who’s had three flats this year (thanks, construction), I can confirm – you don’t slash the fourth one. Brief Therapy helps you treat setbacks as anticipated detours, not dead ends, you can navigate.

The Core Philosophy

Brief Therapy lives in the here and now. Each session stands on its own with one clear takeaway. It’s not “one and done,” but “one at a time.” Some clients need just one session. Others prefer a handful. And if long-term exploration is more your style, that’s always an option too.

One step. One shift. One win—at a time.

Why Brief Therapy?

Here’s the short answer: It works—even in a single session. To highlight just a few real-world examples:

  • Cutting back on drinking: Even a single conversation has helped college students reduce alcohol use, especially when motivational interviewing or feedback was used (Samson & Tanner-Smith, 2015).
  • Weight loss support: In one study, people who filled out a simple “commitment sheet” lost more weight over six months than those who didn’t (Aden-Ali et al., 2017).
  • Quitting smoking: A one-time video call with education and feedback led doctors to prescribe more nicotine replacement therapy, showing how even one session can create change on a larger scale (2015).
  • Boosting mood and coping: Solution-Focused Brief Therapy has consistently been shown to improve mood, coping, and goal achievement across different settings (Kim & Franklin, 2015).

In short: Brief Therapy isn’t a trendy quick fix—it’s practical, adaptable, and grounded in evidence.

Why Choose Brief Therapy with a Private Psychologist?

As far as I know, Brief Therapy is being introduced and integrated into public healthcare in British Columbia (expected in 2026) which is a great start, but you don’t have to wait for policy change or move to BC to try this type of therapy support. In private practice, it’s available now.

People often choose it when they want:

  • Fast, focused support for a specific concern
  • Clear, actionable steps each session
  • A strengths-based approach – not endless pathology
  • Flexibility – Continue as long as it’s helpful, no long-term commitment required
  • Privacy, compassion, and professional follow-through
  • Virtual sessions for comfort, convenience, and continuity

The Bottom Line (yes, pun intended)

Brief Therapy delivers meaningful support for today’s challenges. It’s not a magic cure – but it is a proven, powerful way to progress, one intentional step at a time.
