Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment specifically designed for individuals dealing with trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Developed by Dr. Patricia Resick, CPT focuses on identifying and challenging the negative thoughts and beliefs that arise as a result of traumatic experiences.

At YEG Psychology, our therapists use CPT to help clients process trauma, reduce distressing symptoms, and develop healthier thinking patterns for long-term healing.

How CPT works

CPT is based on the idea that trauma can cause individuals to develop distorted thoughts and beliefs about themselves, others, and the world. These thoughts can contribute to feelings of fear, guilt, shame, and anger, which can perpetuate PTSD symptoms. In CPT, the goal is to help clients identify and challenge these harmful beliefs, replace them with more balanced and accurate thoughts, and develop healthier ways of thinking and coping. Key elements of CPT include:

  • Identifying Negative Beliefs: CPT helps you identify the maladaptive thoughts and beliefs that have developed in response to the trauma, such as feeling unsafe, guilty, or unworthy. These beliefs often keep you stuck in a cycle of distress.
  • Challenging Cognitive Distortions: Once negative beliefs are identified, CPT helps you challenge them by exploring evidence that contradicts these thoughts. This process helps you gain a more balanced perspective, reducing the emotional charge associated with traumatic memories.
  • Learning New Ways of Thinking: CPT teaches you how to replace distorted thoughts with healthier, more realistic beliefs. This shift in thinking helps reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories and leads to greater emotional resilience.
  • Developing Healthy Coping Strategies: Throughout CPT, you’ll learn strategies to manage distressing thoughts and emotions, as well as techniques to better cope with the challenges that arise in daily life.

Effective for a Variety of Issues

CPT is particularly effective in treating trauma and PTSD but can also be beneficial for a range of other challenges, including:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and panic disorders related to trauma
  • Depression related to traumatic experiences
  • Guilt, shame, and self-blame after trauma
  • Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks related to past trauma
  • Grief and loss
  • Difficulty with trust or emotional regulation
