Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an integrative approach to therapy that helps individuals understand and heal their inner world by exploring the different “parts” of themselves. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is grounded in the idea that we all have multiple parts or aspects within us that influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

These parts can sometimes be in conflict or carry emotional pain, but through IFS therapy, we work to restore balance, harmony, and self-compassion.

At YEG Psychology, our IFS-informed therapists use this approach to help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and promote lasting healing.

How IFS works

IFS therapy is based on the understanding that our minds are made up of various parts that can hold distinct emotions, beliefs, and experiences. These parts often take on specific roles to protect us or to cope with past wounds. In IFS therapy, the goal is to identify and understand these parts, develop healthy relationships with them, and help them work together harmoniously.

The primary components of IFS therapy include:

  • Identifying the Parts: IFS helps clients identify the different parts of themselves, such as their “Exiles” (the parts holding past trauma or pain), “Managers” (the parts that try to keep us functioning and avoid pain), and “Firefighters” (the parts that act impulsively to escape emotional distress). Each part has its own role and purpose.
  • The Self: At the core of IFS is the concept of the “Self,” which represents the balanced, compassionate, and wise center of your being. The Self has the ability to lead and guide the parts in a healing direction. IFS therapy works to help clients reconnect with their Self, so that it can heal and guide their internal system.
  • Healing Through Connection: In IFS, healing occurs when clients learn to interact with their parts from the perspective of the Self, bringing compassion and understanding to each part. The therapy helps you release burdens of trauma and pain carried by the parts and restore balance within your internal system.
